ICMR-NIHR conducts research on health issues that affect India’s tribal populations, including nutritional disorders, communicable and non-communicable diseases prevalent in tribal communities, and environmental health problems.

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Jodhpur, was established on 27 June 1984 as the Desert Medicine Research Centre (DMRC). It was later renamed the National Institute for Implementation Research on Non-Communicable Diseases (NIIRNCD) on 7 December 2019 and subsequently redesignated as NIHR on 29 April 2026.

NIHR focuses on generating high-impact research across priority domains, strengthening capacity through specialized training programmes, and developing effective behaviour change communication strategies to address non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors.

ICMR-NIHR conducts interdisciplinary research on regionally prevailing communicable and non-communicable diseases, provides support in disease surveillance activities in the form of epidemic investigation and diagnosis, evaluation and training.
