The Transfusion Transmitted Diseases Department is involved in research on Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Research activities of the department revolve around studying the various aspects of these viral infections with the help of molecular, proteomic and imaging flow cytometry. Apart from research, the department, under the aegis of National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) & Mumbai Districts Aids Control Society (MDACS), hosts the NABL accredited National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for HIV testing, one of the 13 national level referral centres in the country. NRL caters to about 350 HIV testing laboratories through 8 State Reference Laboratories four each from Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh, and 2 Union Territories of Daman & Diu and Dadra Nagar Haveli. The key responsibilities of the NRL include confirming the status of HIV 1&2 and, indeterminate samples using Western Blot, distribution of panel sera to assess the quality at the affiliated centres. In addition to testing services, the department is also involved in capacity building through training programs for blood bank technicians as well as biannual EQAS workshops for NRL affiliated laboratories. The department is also interested in exploring holistic approaches for Liver cirrhosis, Chronic Kidney disease(CKD), Non alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD). We are also keen on exploring public private partnerships to provide quality testing services at a low cost for patients with HBV/HCV.
